Arts Garage Supports Jazz Education: The Bridge Project will continue another term!

Thanks to the cooperation of Arts Garage, the Bridge Project will continue another term!  An extra special thanks goes to Alyona Ushe Arts Garage President/CEO;  Mr. John Lariviere, Arts Garage Director of Education & Facilities; the entire Arts Garage staff, and the support of the Arts Garage Guild for making it possible to bring this program to our community.

Surprise Jam Session with Pro Sax Player, Mr. Cornelius Johnson, Jr.

Every Saturday afternoon, dedicated jazz students come to Arts Garage to play jazz and to learn how to become better jazz musicians. Oftentimes, students cross paths with artists and world-famous musicians and actors. Recently, students were fortunate to meet Ms. Avery Sommers who is Bessie Smith in the Arts Garage recent, sold-out production The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith- A play with Music.

Mr. Cornelius Johnson, Jr, one of the musicians who is performing in the show, heard the students playing Blue Bossa and asked to jam with them.  It was a wonderful surprise for students,  not only  to experience jazz with a professional musician, but to be able to play alongside him on the same stage that has been graced by many famous musicians.  Mr. Johnson enjoyed the jam session so much, he joined in the following week and played Doxy with the students.

Jazz is like that.  It brings people together.  We never know what musical opportunities await us at Arts Garage.

Lucky kids!

Special Guest: Drummer, Mr. Alan "Allie Abe" Albert

In early March, The Bridge Project performed for the Arts Garage Guild and shared about the program. One particular member of the Arts Garage Guild, Mr. Alan "Allie Abe" Albert, showed a genuine interest in the project and mission. We invited him to visit the class to see what the students were working on.

Mr. Albert, guild member and professional drummer, is a passionate jazz enthusiast and really enjoyed sharing with the students.  He not only sat in with them and provided great feedback and tips, but he also repaired one of the instruments!

Mr. Albert is talented and was very kind and generous to spend time with our students, sharing resources and information about being a great jazz musician.

Times like these are priceless and the students really appreciated the visit. We hope Mr. Albert will return to jam with us again soon!
